Florida Legislature still not getting it right
Although I must admit that the property tax cut plans that seem to be evolving in Tallahassee do actually finally seem to have some teeth in them, the idea that they will cut my taxes to last year's levels, then have a special election, coupled with the primary election, on January 29 of NEXT year (2008) is awful. Meaningful tax relief should come NOW. If we have to have an election to change the constitution to approve the new tax plan, have it NOW. The special session will be next week, where I hope they will pass good reform, but they are still putting off that reform until next year by having the special election in Jan. of '08. Our tax bills will go out in the fall, so we won't get much of a tax cut this year and I bet people will be wondering why? The reason is because special elections are expensive to hold and the legislature isn't interested in having one before August (which would actually do some good for us) because they have already decided to put off the cuts until next year. Probably, the rationale for that is to allow a year for the local governments to figure out where and what to cut in preparation for the new law and because special elections are expensive so they figure they can tack it on to an already existing election. Both of those arguments have merit, admittedly, but they are simply nothing more than excuses. Meaningful tax cuts should come NOW, with a special election held NOW, immediately following the legislative session.
